Consultations
What happens during an Ayurvedic & naturopathic consultation?
During an appointment, we will look at your current state of health to determine the imbalance in Ayurvedic terms. We'll discuss your health history and case, and your pulse, complexion, gait and general appearance will be examined.
Together, we will discuss your treatment protocol to help bring you back into balance. Every protocol is different, but may include:
The goal is to support your body, mind and emotions, helping you to reach a state of balance, health and wellbeing.
Simple home remedies may also be offered. These little tips are something that you can not only use at home during treatment, but also utilise in the future for yourself and your family.
As a qualified naturopath, I may offer herbs from Western herbal medicine along with Ayurvedic herbs. Many herb options are now organic, so you know you're getting the best option for your wellbeing.
Traditional Ayurvedic massage. (Abhyanga)
Massage oils that are enriched with medicinal herbs to treat a variety of conditions that cause pain in the body. The oil is applied liberally in long strokes which also calms the senses allowing for deep relaxation, and nourishment. Improved sleep and vitality are a common experience.
It is primarily one of the treatments used in Panchakarma to mobilise toxins, these toxins are held in the deep tissues of the body and are moved to the gut to be expelled from the body. The treatment may be followed by a hot steam bath during Panchakarma. Or for general wellbeing hot towels are applied for deep calm.
Physically conditions such as muscle stiffness, arthritis, rheumatism, spondylosis, multiple sclerosis, Parkinsons disease polymyalgia and fibromyalgia benefit greatly from regular hot oil massage.
It may be prescribed for an hour a day for 5-14 days for profoundly deep rejuvenation.
Swedan – herbal steam
Herbal steam opens the pores, flushes and cleanses the system through the skin. It reduces pain and stiffness in your body, eliminates toxins, and enhances your skin. Its effect is enhanced when taken after Abhyanga. Currently unavailable.
Pindswed – herb or spiced filled bolus are warmed and applied directly to the body
A deeply relaxing treatment with the added benefit of reducing pain and swelling associated with arthritis, lymphoedema and fluid retention. It may be applied to the whole body or locally for specific points of blockage.
Shirodhara
According to Ayurveda, Shirodhara is the best treatment for diseases of the nervous system and emotional problems such as chronic depression and anxiety (panic) attacks. It is recommended for chronic headaches, migraines, insomnia, depression, head tension, neck and shoulder pain, and nervous disorders. It is especially useful for pain management. The term “Shirodhara” literally translated means head (Sira) and continuous flow (Dhara).
A gentle, soothing therapy applied to the forehead using warm herbal oils and or milk to induce a deep relaxation creating a deep sense of calm and wellbeing. Best when combined with other treatments.
Shirodhara stimulates the pineal gland which produces serotonin and melatonin. These hormones play an important role in our emotional balance, and melatonin is also known to have an anti-aging quality.
Basti Treatments
Specially prepared, warm herbal oil is poured on the affected part of the body inside a black gram paste and retained for 15-20 minutes. Healing properties of the oil deeply cleanse and enrich the blood, build and maintain strong muscle and connective tissues and lubricates the joints keeping them flexible and pain free.
Kati basti
For lower back ache, sciatica, pelvic and lumbar sacral pain. Treatment is followed by a back massage. Excellent for chronic back pain.
Heart basti
Is a sublime treatment to strengthen the cardiovascular system. In Ayurveda and yoga the heart is the centre where our emotions arise from. When we calm the heart and remove emotional blockages the nervous system returns to a state of calm.
Used in such conditions as palpitations, post heart attack to strengthen the physical heart, anxiety, and panic attacks.
